My 5 Favorite Books

I recently saw one of my favorite bloggers make a list like this, and I really want to rack my brain to really see which books have affected me most in my life. Bear with me while I sort this out, guys.

Letters to a Young Actor, by Robert Brustein (I read this book in high school, when I felt that I had to make a decision either to go to a great university and get a real job, or audition for acting conservatories and pursue my dream. I thought that the only way I could get into show business was through an acting school. This book was the first thing that affirmed in me that I could be an actor AND go to a great university. Not only that, it was better for me to take all those other courses I wanted to take and not just focus on acting. If I hadn’t read this, I don’t know where I would be now.)
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare (In high school I played Helena my senior year. The first time I truly connected with a character was when I said her lines, “Call you me fair? That fair again unsay.” I knew exactly what she was feeling in that moment - sadness, confusion, terror, everything a teenage girl trying to find her way should be feeling.)
Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare (The first show I ever directed, and the thing I feel most accomplished about doing to this day.)
To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee (Never before have the values of human decency, integrity, and courage been so beautifully worded in a book for me. I reread this recently on audiobook, and I could read it a million more times and never get tired of it.)
The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown (Don’t judge - to my 8th grade self, this book was the best thing since Pokemon Yellow. It was the first book in at least 5 years that I picked up and tirelessly read all the way through. It reminded me that books can be fun, exciting, and full of adventure, I just needed to take the time to find them.)

Now that I really think about it, very few books resonated deeply in me through high school and even college. It was hard for me to take all the information in, reading was definitely more of a chore. Having recently discovered audiobooks, I realize now that I can absorb audio material much more easily than reading. I guess that makes sense - movies actually influenced me a lot more in that time period. So maybe that list will be next?

Being nice to strangers, no matter what, actually does make the world a better place, even just in some small way. Whether someone does or doesn’t deserve my kindness, why should it matter? If a stranger extends a kind hand to me on the sidewalk, in a cafe, even in a parking garage, would I be more inclined to be nice to others because of it? Absolutely. And so, in an ideal world, everyone would ever so slowly be nice to everyone else.

First major world crisis solved, guys. Finally putting my college degree to use.
